Stay with us near Jedediah Smith and the northern redwoods
If your trip brings you to Redwood National and State Parks, we invite you to consider a stay by the water. Our bed and breakfast is in Smith River, California, where the Smith River estuary meets the Pacific. We are outside the parks, with ocean and river-mouth views and a different landscape to return to after a day among the trees.
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is about a 30-minute drive. That time is for this northern park, not for every grove in the redwood parks.
Choose the part of the redwoods you want to explore
The redwood parks cover a large region, so "near Redwood National Park" can mean different things. We suggest starting with the places you most want to see, then choosing your base around them.
For a northern redwoods visit, our local guide introduces Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and the trails along Howland Hill Road. Jedediah Smith is about a 30-minute drive from Smith River. If your plans focus on the southern parts of the park system, check those routes separately. One drive time does not describe every grove.
Plan a day along Howland Hill Road
Our first three trail suggestions are Stout Memorial Grove, Grove of Titans and Boy Scout Tree Trail. We list them in that order when approaching from the north entrance. Howland Hill Road itself is a scenic drive, not a hiking trail.
Our Redwoods & Coast guide brings these places together with official planning resources. Please check current park information before you go; routes and conditions can change. We would rather help you plan a day that fits than suggest you rush through every stop.
Come back to the Smith River estuary
Our setting is at the river mouth, not in a redwood grove. If you like the idea of forest walks during the day and a coastal place to stay, that contrast may be part of the pleasure of your trip.
You can explore our room options before deciding. We offer ocean and river-mouth views at the property; please check each room description for its particular outlook rather than assuming every room has the same view.
A quieter alternative to hotels and motels near the redwoods
Looking for a hotel near the redwoods, or an inn or motel close to the park? We are a bed and breakfast — guests also say B&B or BnB — in Smith River, CA. We are not a hotel inside Redwood National and State Parks, and we are not a vacation rental in the forest.
The accommodations are quiet rooms at the estuary, with ocean and river-mouth views on some stays and a garden view on another. House 175 is a separate whole-house stay on the same Smith River property. If you would rather sleep in Brookings, Oregon, that is a different address; we are about a 15-minute drive from Brookings and about 25 minutes from Crescent City.

Questions about where to stay near the redwoods
Looking for a hotel near the Redwoods?
We are not a hotel. Arky's is a bed and breakfast in Smith River, California, outside Redwood National and State Parks. Guests who want a quieter alternative to hotels and motels near the redwoods stay here and drive to the groves for the day. Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is about a 30-minute drive. Southern groves are a longer, different drive.
Where should I stay near Jedediah Smith Redwoods?
Our Smith River lodging sits at the river mouth, about 30 minutes from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. It is a place to stay close to the northern redwoods, not a motel inside the trees and not an address inside the park.
Is this a vacation rental in the redwoods?
No. We are a seasonal bed and breakfast, open May 1 through September 30, not a vacation rental in a redwood grove. House 175 is a separate whole-house stay on our property in Smith River. Nightly rates range from US$230 to US$400; check your room and dates before you book.
Do you have ocean-view accommodations near the redwoods?
The property looks over the Smith River estuary and the Pacific. Please read each room. The Garden View Room faces the garden and forest, while our other rooms look toward the ocean and the river mouth.
