This is not a far-away day trip for us. Life gathers here, just outside our door— brown pelicans, harbor seals, otters, egrets and great blue herons, gulls, passing Canada geese, a falcon now and then, and many birds we have no names for.

Some days the river is still as glass. Some days it is silk. Some days it is storm, or a song leaping with light. Far out, St. George Reef Lighthouse holds the horizon— and the hour can feel like a dream.
